I was under the assumption that Chicago has a considerable amount of IMG-friendly programs, that's why I was saying I'm a little shocked by the vast number of Detroit area residency spots landed by this year's match and the lack of matches done in NY as well, which has the most numerous IMG friendly programs. Not one person matched in NY, which I find a bit odd.We can't match in NY because we do not have NY approval yet. Detroit is IMG friendly because no one really wants to live there and they have a bunch of programs. There is no advanced gen surg that I know of, they are all categorical.

Not in gen surg anyway. Some of the surg subspecialties may have advanced spots.
Another girl got categorical surgery through the SOAP at Henry Ford (a very awesome SOAP match). However, she probably was an extremely qualified candidate in the first place. So 3 categorical surgery matches from UMHS. Proof right there folks. A friend of mine told me her mentor who recently took step 1 scored a 262.
Wonder where s/he will end up. Not one person matched in NY, which I find a bit odd. I would like to add a small caveat with regards to Detroit. While it is true, that it's certainly IMG friendly. I believe that Detroit is IMG friendly for exceptional candidates. I know a lot of people who matched there, and a lot of didn't even get a single interview there.
The people who were matching all had scores >230 I&II, while those with less had scores below 230. I would add that I am speaking with regards to specialties not including FM, Psych etc.
I'm sure that some of those people were able to get great spots there with scores below what I mentioned above. Also, I can't overstate the importance of doing an elective at the place where you want to match!!! Want chicago? DO AN ELECTIVE THERE!!!
During your medical school rotations try to schedule your electives mainly in Psychiatry to get touch-base with the attendings so you will get LORs from them later on. Also you need a book to impress the faculty you are interacting with and increase your knowledge at the same time. Most people who match will have the ** **.
During interviews, at most of them, you will be asked about Psychiatry books you have read, and having the answer ready, as above, will further push your ranking up in the NRMP match. We also strongly recommend that you have the same book as AMGs in your shelf, namely the ** ** as above. Applicants are also differentiated based on the knowledge and their interest in the domain they are applying to, so be ready. Also, IMGs should apply to the same programs where we helped their peers to match in the previous years, these programs are found in many states as described in the below mentioned list.
